Parent Guidelines for Bike Skills 101: Learn to Ride – Kids

Register to Learn To Ride (for kids)

Overview:

  • What It Is:
A free group class for children aged 5 and up who are ready to transition from training wheels to riding a two-wheeler.

  • What Your Child Will Learn:
Basic bike skills including balancing, pedaling, starting, stopping, and steering using our safe, easy, and effective method taught by experienced instructors.

  • Outcome:
Most kids master the basics in one session. Even if your child needs extra practice, you’ll leave with a low-stress technique to help them ride independently.

Class Details:

  • Duration: 2 hours

  • Location: A designated, traffic-free environment (a large paved space roughly the size of two tennis courts)

  • Class Size: Maximum of 15 children

  • Instructors: 1-2 trained Bike New York instructors

  • Equipment:

    • Your child must bring their own bicycle and helmet.

    • Please ensure the bicycle fits properly and is in good working order (wheels spin freely and brakes function correctly).

    • The child should be able to sit comfortably with both feet flat on the ground.

    • Training wheels should be removed in advance and tires fully inflated.

Registration Process:

  • TBA: Recommended to secure a spot (no waitlists, but spaces are limited).

  • Walk-Ins: Welcome if space is available.

  • Account Setup:

    • When registering, please include your child’s name and birthdate in the ‘Personal Info’ section.

    • Alternatively, create your own account, choose “register family,” and input your child’s details during registration.

Sanitation Foundation

Join us for a morning of community service before our event day kicks off. In collaboration with the Sanitation Foundation, we’ll clean the dead-end bay walkway, adjacent sidewalks, and greenway entry. All tools and supplies will be provided—just bring your enthusiasm and energy!

Why it matters:
As the official nonprofit partner of the NYC Department of Sanitation, the Sanitation Foundation empowers New Yorkers to take hands-on action toward a cleaner, healthier city. Their mission of waste reduction and neighborhood stewardship aligns perfectly with our goal to activate 9100 Bay Parkway as a vibrant, sustainable, and welcoming public space. • Community Service: Earn credits/hours for your community.

  • Afterwards: Stay for free refreshments, bike safety demos, kids’ activities (StreetLab), and community fun at Pineapple Plaza!

NYC Economic Development Corporation (EDC)

EDC will join us at Pineapple Plaza to gather community feedback on the city’s Greenway Expansion Plan, in partnership with NYC DOT and NYC Parks. Attendees can visit the EDC table to learn more about upcoming improvements to New York’s biking and walking network and take a short digital survey to share their input on future greenway priorities.

Engagement Details:

  • Tabling Time: 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM

  • Location: Near Pineapple Café and Bike Safety Zone

Together with EDC, DOT, Parks, and NYC Greenway, we’re making Pineapple Plaza by the sea a model for community-driven placemaking and safe cycling.
