Unlocking Red Hook’s Waterfront: An Open Invitation to Amazon
Brooklyn’s 26-mile Waterfront Greenway is slowly stitching together a safe, scenic corridor for walkers and cyclists from Greenpoint to East New York. Yet one of its most glaring gaps—nearly four contiguous miles—runs right through Red Hook and into Sunset Park Brooklyn Greenway Initiative.
Pineapple Ride’s mission is to empower communities through safe cycling and urban exploration. Completing this missing link would advance every one of our core values: safety, sustainability, mental well-being, and joyful riding.
The Missed Opportunity Between IKEA and Amazon
IKEA understood the power of a public waterfront when it opened its gracious esplanade along Erie Basin in 2008. But the path ends abruptly at the northern fence of Amazon’s DAB5 fulfillment center (270 Richards St.) —a site literally wedged between IKEA and the former Fairway Market Brownstoner. It lacks a continuation of a waterfront that was redeveloped and it abruptly ends right along the water’s edge. Amazon is uniquely positioned to change that.
Why Extending the Greenway Matters
A Friendly Challenge to Amazon
Connect the Path. Continue the esplanade from IKEA’s gate to Columbia Street, following the shoreline or creating a protected spur on Beard and Ferris Streets—both on NYC DOT’s preferred Greenway alignment.
Engage the Community. Host design charrettes with local residents, cyclists, and small businesses to shape amenities that serve everyone.
Lead by Example. Use low-carbon construction methods and native plantings, and showcase real-time emissions data to set a new standard for sustainable last-mile logistics hubs.
